Club Night – Bill & Bob Cakebread
1 High Street
Great Bookham, Leatherhead, Surrey KT23 4AA
UK
My brother and I both served 5 year indentured apprenticeships with AMC.
I started there in 1958 and left in 1966 when the receivers were called in. On completing my apprenticeship I joined the Design Drawing Office under Horace Watson/Tony Dennis before becoming the assistant design engineer working with Horace Watson and Charles Udall on the design of the P10. I left to join Peter Berthon (of ERA and BRM fame) to work on the design of racing car engines at Rye.
My brother Bob joined in 1962 and left in 1969 when the factory finally closed. He also served in the Design Drawing Office at the end of his apprenticeship and was deeply involved in the design of the Commando. After leaving he joined Colin Seeley.
Our talk is supported by a Powerpoint presentation on a CD so a laptop is necessary together with a compatible projector and screen. I also have a short DVD associated with Commando frame testing that may be interesting if it could be played but that is not essential to the presentation.
