Kempton Park Classic Bike Show 18 May 2019

Surrey Section at the Kempton Park Classic Bike Show 18 May 2019

The Surrey section represented the NOC at the Kempton Park Classic Bike Show and auto-jumble. The numbers of enthusiast attending and traders did seem down from last year, and there were some spaces in the display hall for the club stands. The auto-jumble had many stall spaces vacant; this meant that many of the traders never came, as I was reliably informed that there were other events on at the same time as this one.

We were only allowed five or six bikes, but the organisers were very generous with their ticket allocations and we were allowed twelve tickets. This was for the owners who were bringing along their bikes as well as those that helped to organise and set up the stand for us. Andy Neal, and Phil Hannam, came along as our helpers to carry all our equipment and erect our stand that was brought along by Mike Duffell.

The Saturday for this event, going by the weather forecast at the start of the week, as it was meant to be raining and cloudy, but the sun shone so we all had a good day. This helped as many of those who displayed their bikes also road their bikes to this event.

We had a good display of the Surrey section member’s bikes, and our stand as usually was crowded. This with those who owned Norton’s to those who wanted to ask questions about the NOC, their own bikes, and the Surrey section. For those who wanted to join and to be part of the Surrey section and the NOC, we handed out many of our cards, and details of our club nights. We also answered so many questions from all those owners of twins and single’s who came over to see us and the bikes on display. An owner of a Jubilee was annoyed that we did not have any of the lightweight’s bikes on display. I explained to him, that we could not get any members who own them to bring them along. The one member who did have an ES400 Electra had moved down to Devon. He then asked many questions about his own bike, as well as where he could get a parts book and a manual for his Jubilee. I suggested to him, that when he gets his own Jubilee back on the road, he might like to exhibit his bike on our stand at any of our shows that we attend. He left very happy with the out come to all his questions.

Ken Rawlinson arranged the event for us as he worked with Morton’s to get our stand and our members all together for the days event.

Mike Duffell brought along all the stand equipment for this event, as well as bringing the so much required kettle. This we all needed, as with the coffee, tea and biscuits it was very much welcomed.

Peter Burden brought along his immaculate and stunning 1963 650ss. This was exported to Jacks Motors in Johannesburg in South Africa, on the 12th June 1963. It was registered in Boksburg as FYR 723W. It returned to the UK, in 2001 and it required a complete restoration. Peter explained that bike when he took ownership of it; it was not in that good a condition. It was completely refurbished, and then reregistered in the UK, with an age related number plate. Peter has kept the bike totally, standard, apart from upgrading the electrics to 12 volts. It has retained its twin Amal 376 Monobloc’s and the Lucas competition magneto that the bike was dispatched with to Jacks Motors, when new from Bracebridge Street.

Those that brought along their bikes to display them on our stand are as follows

Mike Duffell: 1953 Model 40 Manx Norton, the ex Des Craig owned bike. This bike was very successful when Des raced it, and he was the son of Joe Craig. Des won some races with this Manx and Mike is related to the Craig family. Des Craig worked for the large motorcycle dealership, Comerfords in Kingston, Thames Ditton in Surrey.

Mike Petryszyn: 2010 Norton 961 SE. Mike’s bike is the 16th from first of the very first batch of Norton 961’s produced, by the new Norton factory. This 961 is from the first batch of 200 bikes.

Peter Burden: 1963 Norton 650ss

Anthony Curzon: 1958 500cc Norton Nomad desert racer. This was a wreck when I first bought it, but it is now the bike it was back in 1958 when it was dispatched to Hap Jones, 2 Clinton Park, in San Francisco, USA. It was returned from the USA in 1991.

Ken Rawlinson: 1967 Norton 650ss, with the blue petrol tank.

Andy Kitchen the show organiser came over to our stand to ask for my Nomad to go to their start up paddock. He then led me out to their fenced off the area where we would bringing the noise. In front of me was John Telford of the AJS & MOC, with his Matchless G80CS inspired bike. There was a very young man on his mini bike and there was also two race bikes that where run up using starting rollers. Those two race bikes really did bring the noise when they coughed, and sprang into life. I was last and very worried that the Nomad would misbehave, with all those show spectators looking at me. I used John Bolton’s starting technique, and away the Nomad went first kick. Not that loud, or a thunderous, emitting silencer, but Andy was happy with the out come.

My 500cc Nomad was awarded the Best Vintage, or manufactured prior to 1965. This came with a golden cup, and a bottle of Prosecco, as well as an Ace Café goodie bag. Sadly, the Surrey section did not get the best stand, but the Waterlooville club stand on our right did get the best stand.

To all those who brought their bikes along, and helped, can I express my thanks and gratitude to you all for such a wonderful day for the Surrey section.

Anthony Curzon, press officer Surrey section
