Ardingly Show 2016

Surrey section at the Ardingly show on 3.4.2016

The Surrey section had a stand at the South of England Classic Motorcycle show at Ardingly on Sunday 3rd April 2016. We had a new potential member Malcolm King  arrive on a 1965 Atlas, and  we had extra space as my friend Andy could not ride my 1970 Commando Roadster having woken that morning with a bad headache and double vision. This is not conducive to riding a big Norton down the A22. I was also going to reveal for the first time at this show my second completed build of the prototype Unified Twin engine into a completed bike. This was not to be as there have been some engine problems and it only just had its MOT completed a few days before. I have also now sent of for it to be registered with the DVLA so hopefully it can be used and returned to the road in the not too distant future.

The ride down to Ardingly on my own was a wonderful experience as South Croydon and the A22 was all but empty of traffic but this was to change later in the day. The morning was tad cold, but sort of sunny and an air cooled engine operates so much better under these conditions. To sit there on a desert racer and enjoying the ride is a very special moment in ones life. With the sound of the exhaust like music to ones ears it makes you feel so alive to the joys of riding a big Norton.

So therefore there were two spare spaces, and John Duplain added his really nicely built and spectacular Norton Dominator café racer. Also on our stand was Patrick Bullimor who brought along he’s newly acquired 1965 Atlas, and this is in remarkably original condition. This bike even came with the original took kit that was still in the tool tray under the dual seat. Patrick complained to me about the vibration, but I told him he that he was used to riding a Commando so he had not experiencing the vibration from the 750cc engine in a featherbed frame.

We had many visitors to our stand who kept us all busy with the numerous questions that were being asked through out the day. Mike Duffell brought along the sections stand and front plinth assisted by our treasurer Geoff Cole. Mike brought along his 1953 ex Des Craig 350cc Manx Norton. The day warmed up and there was a huge amount of visitors to this show which is becoming so very popular. This being down to the huge amount of effort and publicity that is put in by Julie Diplock and her very efficient team who run a very well oiled machine. So a great day was had by all and the weather also did not disappoint but saved the very heavy rainfall for so much later in the day.

Our very own Chris Barraclough did his normal very well organised job of helping to erect our plinth in front of our stand and to this we added Mike Duffell’s Manx Norton. He will be away for the 21st May Kempton Park show so the rest of us will have to figure it out for ourselves.

Those that brought along their bikes for the display on our stand are as follows.

Malcolm King 1965 Atlas 750cc

Geoff Cole 1969 Commando 750cc

Dave Gibson 1935 International

Mike Duffel 1953 350cc ex Des Craig Manx

Anthony Curzon 1966 N15CS desert racer

Chris Barraclough 1957 19S 600cc single

John Dupalin 1961 600cc Dominator café racer

Patrick Bullimor 1965 Atlas 750cc

The Surrey section also managed to win the best stand at the show and Mike Duffell went up to accept it for us all. The rosette we found had been stuck on the stands top and it was only noticed when some of us had returned. The large and varied auto-jumble being a very hard to resist temptation for us all. I lucky enough to find a Girling C suspension spanner that the stall holder told me was for adjusting brakes with. I can add this to another one of my tool kits. I also managed to find a proper Tommy bar to complete an original tool kit for my 1970 Commando Roadster. I know it is very anorak of me but it sort of completes the bike and I now have all the correct tools and of course the correct tool bag. I have also managed to put together a complete tool kit for my 1963 Atlas Scrambler, and Patrick Bullimor’s tool kit had Shelley spanners in it. This was the one question I had always wanted to know if Norton and may be AMC used the Shelley brand of spanner in the factory supplied tool kits so now I know.

When returning home there was an accident on the A22 so the road was closed and this required a detour via Lingfield and then to Edenbridge and finally home. Lingfield being a small village was then over run with traffic as the detour went through this village. The gas station doing a very brisk trade. Those back roads are a great ride on a desert racer, as the holes, ruts and bumps are taken with ease. The detour was a great ride as the roads were virtually empty, and the weather being kind it was a very pleasing way to ride. I later found out on Monday via an email from Chris Barraclough that the accident involved a 70 year old rider on a silver Norton. I am just hoping and praying that it was not one of our members.

A huge thank you to all those who came and took the time to display their bikes on our stand. To Mike Duffell and Geoff Cole for bringing along the stands equipment, and to Mike Duffell for also including the kettle for the tea and coffee and supplying the chocolate digestive biscuits. So all those that attended had a ready supply of hot drinks for the duration of the show. Mike also brings along the seats for all of us to flop into when we all need some where to sit, have a drink and eat our sandwiches.

The section also had a table to the side of the stand, where we displayed the Surrey sections list of events that we shall be going to through 2016. This included shows and the talks that we will be having at the Stepping Stones. We shall also be organising a BBQ at the Stepping Stones for later in the year. To this we shall be inviting all our members and encourage them to attend.

To all who came, and for all those that helped organise a great day out, erected and packed away the stand and all our other articles, I thank you all. To Chris Barraclough that was always answering questions through out the day, and to Dave Gibson who was also answering question about his so very much admired International we were totally rocking it.
