Belated June 2016

Dear All, Apologies for belated Newsletter – seems like there has been lots going on within the Branch and for me personally a trip to the Practice week of the Isle of Man TT which was cracking!
Following Club Night this Wednesday 8th June, you will be aware that the Branch is holding a BBQ and bike Meet at The Stepping Stones Pub from Midday this Saturday 11th June, but feel free to come along an hour earlier!
Invites have been extended to most of the local Classic Bike Clubs and feedback suggests that they intend turning out in force!  As we are hosting it, please make a special effort to come along, hopefully with your Norton so we can have a good turnout.
Tina the Landlady will have reserved parking at the rear of the pub car park and the Stepping Stones will be putting on a good spread with chicken, sausages and home made burgers, all good healthy food as well as several real ales!  The plan is to gather with our bikes, enjoy a natter and raise some money for the Joan Seeley Pain Relief Trust who are trying to raise money for a special chair for St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley.
We will be having a raffle so I would ask that if anyone has any unwanted Xmas  presents, then please bring something along. Tina, the landlady of the pub is donating a raffle prize of a meal for 2 and Colin Seeley has offered one of his excellent books, the landlady has also said that there may be a flight/flying lesson available from Redhill aerodrome which will be auctioned on the day.
This is for a very good cause, hopefully none of us will need the care that these places offer, the chair will cost over £3,000 but so far over £2,000 has been raised towards it so please let us show Colin and his Trust what generous people we bikers really are and on the day contribute generously, the important thing is that you are there. Family and friends are also very welcome so please invite them, they do not have to be bikers.
Please come along and support this event – it looks to be a good day!

·       A mention of the other lesser known twins around after WWII.
·       Production of the model 7 and its problems.
·       The model 88 and Featherbed frame.
·       The model 99 and the off-road twins.
·       The genesis of the 650 and its siblings.
·       The 500 and 650 Domiracers.
·       The 750 and off-road versions.
·       And What happened after the end of Featherbed production.
A very comprehensive talk and enjoyed by all of us there!

Mays Club Night was a sunny evening and general get together and natter.  With 17 members in attendance there was plenty to chat about and the night flew by!

On Sunday 8th May, Horsham held an “All things British family day” with steam engines, traction engines, classic British Cars and of course British Motorcycles!!  About 10 people met up at South Nutfield and we followed a very lazy route through countryside lanes ending up at Horsham Town Centre where we displayed our bikes, saw the other vehicles and took the chance to eat and drink from the many stalls set up around the town square!

On 21st May we hosted a stand at Kempton where Anthony Curzon produced to the public for the very first time, the unique “Unified Twin” which got a lot of interest from visitors and looks absolutely stunning!  I believe there has since been an article in Real Classic Magazine about this very special machine.
Throughout the day we were fortunate enough to receive many enquiries about all the bikes on display and the general view was the Norton marque stood proud!

On 26th May 8 of us were given a very special guided tour around Newman Cams in Farnborough Kent.  We were shown the various machines and engineering processes involved in turning a Billet of metal into a finely finished Camshaft, and Ken our host explained the range of Cams they can supply from mass produced items to very special and personalised “one offs”.  It was very interesting and stunning to see the skill involved.  At the conclusion of the tour Ken showed us a camshaft for a Merlin engine Spitfire!  Incredible!  Following the tour we had an impromptu stop off at the Met police sports Club – The Warren – at Biggin Hill and had a good lunch and coffee before going our separate ways! A very good day out!

Forthcoming Events
Obviously the BBQ on Saturday 11th will not have escaped you – so please come along and join us and wave the Norton flag!

Sunday 3rd July instead of our own Norton Day at Brooklands this year, Brooklands are hosting a Motorcycle day with attendees from many of the big factories including Triumph and Norton Motorcycles.  The event will showcase some of the historic bikes in the Museum collection, many of which will be demonstrated by the Brooklands Motorcycle Team. Alongside them, BMW and Ducati will be presenting their latest models along with an impressive line-up of other manufacturers including Triumph, Norton, Royal Enfield and MV Agusta.

Former motorcycle and truck-racing legend Steve Parrish will be the special guest at this, the main Brooklands Museum motorcycle event of the year.

We will have a display there amongst the other marques, would you like to show your bike – Let us know asap!

On Sunday 17th July Warlingham Rugby Club are hosting a Classic Vehicle show.  Members attended last year and came back with very favourable reports!  So would you like to attend?  Would you like to show your bike?  If so please contact me and I will forward you a booking form.
And On Saturday 20th August Surrey Branch are hosting a stand at the 18th Capel Classic Vehicle show – would you like to display your bike there?  Last year we had an excellent turnout of 13 bikes and as the show encompasses a Country Fayre as well there is something for everyone!  So if you would like to be part of this let me know and I will suffer the pain of the online booking system on your behalf!  I am good like that!
One final bit of news!  Anthony Curzon is making enquiries about having Stainless Steel exhaust Systems made up for Commandos as he has had some less than favourable results in the past from mainstream suppliers.  Would you be interested in having a Stainless Steel Exhaust System made for your Commando??  Let me know!
I look forward to seeing you soon and hopefully at this Saturdays BBQ!
Take care
Steve
